New Delhi: The city’s sex market has spread its wings much beyond the confines of G B Road. The dingy kothas are no longer the haunt of the sex workers and their customers. The business has come out in the open. Not only are sex workers soliciting in the open, but they are also satisfying their clients bang on one of Delhi’s busiest roads.




When Sheila Dikshit made Delhi the city of flyovers, all she had in mind was ridding the city of traffic jams. Instead, these flyovers are now providing easy cover for sex workers to ply their trade. The clover leaf AIIMS flyover is home to one such gang.



About 20 sex workers — women, transsexuals and transgenders — have made this flyover their business centre. As night falls, the Ring Road coming from South Extension towards AIIMS converts into a flourishing sex-adda. Customers are given two easy options: either they can use their vehicle or just walk down to the bushes nearby and make out. A long line of voyeurs also takes in the sordid show from the flyover.



The party’s been rocking the flyover for nearly a year now. The service is prompt and professional. You will be given two options — jhaadi ke peechhe ya flyover ke neechhe. Since it rains on most evenings these days, most opt for the under the— flyover option. You don’t get wet in the rain, and the crowd that gathers at the flyover above can’t see you doing it!




But don’t expect the curls of a Julia Roberts or the kamar of a Kareena Kapoor. The product isn’t exactly polished. The lips are lost under umpteen layers of lipstick, the cheeks under caked rouge. The body may smell of lavender, the mouth of one-rupee gutkha.



‘Karna hai kya?’ is the question thrown at you, the moment you approach them.

If your answer is ‘no’, then be prepared for a volley of abuses. But if your reply is positive you are told about the rate. “Yahan karna hai toh 100 rupees, gaadi mein 200 rupees aur ghar mein 300 rupees.” You are then escorted under the flyover and then the action begins.



The place is strewn with condoms and smells awful. They are a no-nonsense people who mean business. If you are found loitering there without a purpose, you will be threatened that the police would come and arrest you. And if you still don’t budge, they start throwing stones at you.




While the customers might be a bit apprehensive of the police, these sex workers aren’t scared one bit. Around 11.30 pm a PCR van comes to the spot, it does every half hour, stops there briefly. The moment the PCR comes, all the action stops and the customers can be seen running helter-skelter.



For 27-year-old Vijay, working as a mason at AIIMS, the place is his favourite hangout spot. “I come here every night around 11. I don’t do anything, I just sit and watch. These sex workers come in autos and taxis, and most of them belong to Orissa, Bengal and Nepal.



There are many clients who come here regularly, one of them is a canteen manager at AIIMS, and some are Yusuf Sarai shop-keepers. The policemen come and sometimes harass these customers, pick them up and take them away, only to release them shortly. All this has been happening for almost a year now. Every night around 60- 100 customers come here,” he says.
