Fashion sense, like film and music "taste", is completely relative and subjective. Also, to have any understanding of contemporay Japanese culture you have to be aware of the rapid recent industrialisation of the post-war era not just in Japan, but in surrounding countries, and how this has modelled the younger generation.

'rapid RECENT industrialisation'

Jesus Shane, you just came in a time machine from the 1960's? it's 2007 baby, post-war era is no longer recent. Japan has been an industrialised diva for a fair amount of decades now.

At least with jeans like that, you can tell people "they're supposed to look this way!" :)

It's probably just another of the many brief trends in Japan that no one will remember in a month or two. Japan is actually one of the most fashion forward countries in the world. Go there and you'll realize how shabbily attired most Americans are in comparison. (I should know I'm Japanese, but I go back to Japan quite frequently.) But at the same time there are fashionable people and tastelessly dressed people anywhere in the world. It's surprising how many people still don't know what a hip place Japan is. Really anyone who looks down on Japan in any way is a
backward ass square who's so behind
and pathetic that no one should give them a second thought.

There are plenty of reasons to look down on Japan that have nothing to do with fashion.

If fashion is the only litmus test you have for a country, I'm glad you're not in any position of decision making power.

Fashion sense, Film, music 'taste' may be relative and subjective to a large degree-- but there are some things that are just wrong. Restraint is something which should be exercised a little more often.
I'm gonna have to disagree with the degree (not the premise) of Shane's statement.
As for these jeans-- kinda ugly, and probably makes us focus a little to much on the risque-- a little on the tasteless side...
